Our solution to digitalize humanitarian aid has been awarded the eTransaction SESAMES 2016 award.
The ceremony took place last week at the TrustTech event in Cannes.
Our winning entry is a solution that digitalizes food assistance transactions in complex environments. Beneficiaries from humanitarian programmes receive contactless cards to purchase goods at local merchants who receive card readers, enabling them for the first time to choose the goods they need using a secure procedure, instead of receiving food rations.
There are currently over a million cards deployed across 11 countries.
This innovation helps the shift from food rations to cash assistance in the humanitarian ecosystem. Our NFC reader and cards makes communities more dynamic as beneficiaries can redeem their allowance from different merchants when they chose, which in turn varies the offering and gives a more dignified approach to aid. In being able to use the card at different merchants, beneficiaries can diversify their diet and are no longer tied to a standardized food parcel.
For humanitarian organizations, it reduces the risk of fraud & theft by monitoring and tracking in almost real-time redemptions and reconciliations. This information is saved into a single repository which improves decision-making in humanitarian action, while optimizing costs and distribution. It works online and offline which is extremely valuable considering the remote locations where the system operates.
