Cashless: 1 Million transactions operated through Famoco devices in Hong Kong’s Great European Festival

Client

Based in Leeds and London, with wider European expansions planned, Ticket Arena and Event Genius work in partnership with events of all sizes across the globe, to help them deliver the best possible experience to their consumers.

Each brand offers distinct services: Ticket Arena is a consumer facing marketplace providing ticket sales and marketing support to the events industry. Event Genius provides powerful event management tools which combine traditional online ticketing technology such as secure barcodes, white-label box offices and customer analytics with RFID solutions like cashless payments, access control and brand activation.

Challenge

In November 2016, one of Asia’s largest carnivals : The Great European Carnival in Hong Kong, wanted an RFID payment system to replace the physical tokens that were traditionally used by over a million customers over 60 days.

The payment system would have to be multi-currency and provide top-up stations, roaming sales and able to handle customer service requests such as refunds. It would also need to work flawlessly as part of a range of the services and technologies, including ticketing and access control, that were already in use at the event.

The solution had to be robust, work offline, be easy-to-use for over 400 members of staff and, due to the event location, could not be a fixed or rigid cable system.

Solution

The Event Genius team provided a solution that used over 400 Famoco FX100 handsets as part of a total of 500 pieces of equipment in use at the event. The FX100 was chosen because it’s easy-to-use, has a great battery life, works offline and is durable enough to survive knock or bangs.

The FX100 was used by event staff throughout the customer journey. After purchasing or redeeming the tickets from one of 20 POS at the entrances to the site, each customer was provided with an event branded RFID card. Cards were chosen ahead of wristbands because they are used regularly in the local region for travel services. Before entry, any pre-purchased tokens and entitlements were then loaded to each card with a simple tap.

These tokens could then be spent at any one of the games, rides or attractions who were each equipped with an FX100 to take payments. Cards could be topped up at one of 50 top-up stations onsite.

Results

During  60 days, over 1 million customers were served at the carnival and the FX100 was used to successfully process millions of individual transactions and replaced an out-dated physical token system. It improved the experience for attendees by making queues and payments quicker and helped the event organisers reduce any loss and errors associated with token handling. Staff found the Famoco devices easy to use and the move to RFID enabled real-time statistics to be used at the carnival for the first time.
